HOW DOES IT WORK?
The camp is returning to its usual format: It is a five-day music camp where youth come together to form a band and write a song.
In addition to the musical aspect, we will offer workshops on self-esteem and leadership development. The workshop topics offered by Rock Camp include, among others, the creation of "zines," critical thinking and media analysis, DIY bookmaking, screen printing, and image and identity. We always strive to place a special emphasis on sensitively teaching youth about issues cultural appropriation and racism, both in the music industry and in all aspects of our lives.
A typical day at camp:
Assembly to mark the start of the day
Workshop and instrument instruction period
Musical performance by artists from Montreal and surrounding areas during lunchtime
Discussion period
Workshop
Group practice
End-of-day assembly
Sample Schedule:
At the end of the week, each band will have written a song with the support of their band coach and band manager, and will have the opportunity to perform it live in a venue to be determined. The entire performance will be recorded and broadcast in real-time so that our extended community can participate in this unforgettable event.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
Rock Camp Montreal is a non-mixed space. This means that our camp activities are exclusively available to youth who identify as girls, transgender, non-binary or have a gender identity that does not fit within society's normative binary framework and are between 10 and 17 years old, inclusively. Rock Camp is absolutely open to transgender boys. We prioritize young people living in the greater Montreal area. No musical experience or instrument ownership is required to participate!
PARTICIPATION FEES AND SCHOLARSHIPS
Rock Camp aims to keep its program accessible to all families, regardless of their economic situation. We always offer scholarships that partially or fully cover the participation fees for young people in case they pose an obstacle to their participation. Please send us an email if you have questions regarding camp week fees or fee subsidy for campers.
